Calm Care, Clearly

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medicines to help you stay relaxed during dental care. We offer two levels: nitrous oxide, breathed through a small nasal mask, and oral conscious sedation, which uses prescribed pills taken before your visit. Both are used with local anesthesia, so the treatment area is numb while your body stays calmer. Your medical history, medications, and pregnancy or breastfeeding status help determine which option may be appropriate.

Services We Offer

Sedation Dentistry Services We Offer

Dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or trouble staying comfortable can make care feel out of reach. We offer sedation dentistry options that help you relax, stay safe, and move through treatment with less stress so you can keep your smile on track.
A fast-acting option that helps you feel calm and relaxed during treatment, then wears off quickly so you can drive yourself home the same day.

Taken before your visit, this deeper sedation creates a calm, drowsy experience with little memory of the appointment, while we monitor you closely.

Calm Comfort, Clear Mind

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is one of the gentlest ways to ease anxiety during a dental visit. You breathe it in through a small mask placed over your nose, and within minutes you’ll feel a calm, pleasant sensation settle over you. The effect is mild and easy to control, so we can adjust it throughout your appointment to keep you comfortable.

One of the biggest advantages is how quickly it wears off: once the mask comes off and you breathe normal oxygen for a few minutes, the effects fade almost completely. That means you can typically drive yourself home and return to your day right away. At Gainesville Dentistry Co., we offer nitrous oxide as a simple, reliable option for patients who feel nervous about treatment or simply want a more relaxed experience.

Relax Deeply, Remember Little

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation offers a deeper level of relaxation for patients who need more than nitrous oxide can provide. About an hour before your appointment, you’ll take a prescribed medication that helps melt away anxiety and leaves you feeling calm and drowsy, though still awake and able to respond.

Many people remember little about the procedure afterward, which makes it an excellent choice if dental fear has kept you from getting the care you need or if you’re facing a longer, more involved treatment. Because the medication stays in your system for several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your visit. If anxiety has stood between you and a healthy smile, we’re glad to discuss whether oral conscious sedation is the right path forward for you.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Dental visits can feel overwhelming when anxiety, sensitivity, or a strong gag reflex keeps getting in the way. Sedation Dentistry helps us make treatment feel more manageable, so you can move through care with less stress and more ease. It opens the door to appointments that feel doable instead of daunting.
Relax through the visit
When your nerves settle, the appointment feels far less draining. You can get through care without the constant tension that usually makes dental visits feel so heavy.
Sedation is used with local anesthesia so you are numb and deeply relaxed while treatment happens. That can make a long or involved visit feel much easier to get through without feeling on edge.
Some people remember very little about the visit, which can be a relief if dental anxiety has built up over time. That lighter memory can make it easier for you to come back when you need care again.
If routine treatment has been difficult because your reflex is easily triggered, this service can help the appointment feel more possible. You spend less energy bracing yourself and more energy getting the care you need.
When more work is needed in one sitting, sedation can help the time pass more smoothly. Instead of feeling worn down by the length of the appointment, you can get through more of your care in a calmer state.
Once your experience feels less scary, it becomes easier to say yes to future care. That shift can help you stop putting things off and start moving toward a healthier smile without the same dread.

Move through dental care feeling calmer, lighter, and more at ease.

Who benefits most from Sedation Dentistry?

If dental visits have felt tense, exhausting, or hard to get through, sedation may open the door to care. We look at your health history and your reasons for asking so you can see whether it fits your needs.

Managing dental anxiety

A racing heart, tight shoulders, or trouble sitting still can make treatment feel overwhelming. Sedation Dentistry may fit you when calm, easier visits would help you keep up with care.

Needing a gentler visit

Sensitive gag reflexes, special needs, or past discomfort can turn even a routine appointment into a struggle. You may be a strong candidate when a more relaxed experience helps the work get done.

Returning after delay

After time away from our office, the idea of catching up can feel intimidating. Sedation Dentistry can be a good fit when you want a judgment-free, pressure-free way to move forward.

Do Any of These Sound Familiar?

We’ve helped thousands of patients who arrived at our office with stories just like yours. They’d been living with these challenges for months or even years before discovering their solution. You might recognize yourself in one or several of these experiences.

Your comfort could begin here

Sedation Dentistry can make stressful visits feel more manageable, leaving you with more relief and peace of mind.

What to expect

Sedation dentistry procedure steps and treatment journey

Knowing what comes next can make sedation feel more manageable. We keep the experience judgment-free and pressure-free, so you can settle in with less stress and more confidence. You are not just a number, and your comfort stays central throughout your visit.
1

Check Candidacy

Your visit starts with a conversation about why you want sedation, whether it is for anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or another concern. We also review your medical history, including conditions, medications, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, so you feel informed before anything moves forward.
2

Feel Calm and Supported

During your appointment, sedation is used alongside local anesthesia so you stay relaxed and comfortable while treatment is underway. With nitrous oxide, you remain awake and responsive, yet more at ease. Oral conscious sedation can leave you drowsy, and you may remember little of the visit afterward.
3

Head Home at Ease

After nitrous oxide, you can return to normal activities right away. Oral conscious sedation calls for a chaperone, no driving, no alcohol, and no legal signing for 24 hours, plus a quiet rest of the day. You leave with a calmer experience behind you and a smoother path to future care.

Patient FAQs

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Sedation dentistry can raise real questions about safety, preparation, and how you will feel during treatment. We answer the most common ones below, and if yours is not here, reach out. We are happy to help you start your journey in a judgment-free, pressure-free way.

What types of sedation dentistry do you offer?

We offer nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, and oral conscious sedation with prescribed sedative pills. Nitrous oxide works through a small nasal mask and wears off quickly, while oral conscious sedation creates a deeper sense of calm for patients who qualify.
That depends on your health history and why you want sedation. We review anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, special needs, medical conditions, medications, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding before we recommend a option that fits you.
No, we use local anesthesia along with sedation so the area is numb before treatment starts. Nitrous oxide can also add a pain-relieving effect, and some patients need both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for heavier anxiety.
You will take the sedative pills as directed, and your appointment is usually scheduled in the morning. A chaperone needs to drive you, stay on the premises, and take you home afterward, since you should not drive or make legal decisions that day.
Preparation is simple for nitrous oxide, with a short fast before your visit. Oral conscious sedation needs more planning: you fast that morning, come with a chaperone, and arrange to take the rest of the day off so you can recover.
Yes, when it is planned and monitored carefully in a dental office. Dr. Feldman has DOCS training for oral conscious sedation, and we review your medical history first because some conditions and medicines can rule out one or both sedation options.
Preparation depends on the type of sedation. Nitrous oxide only requires a short fast before your visit, while oral conscious sedation needs fasting for the morning, a ride to and from our office, and someone to stay with you afterward.
Those conditions matter because some patients with sleep apnea and COPD are not candidates for oral conscious sedation. We take that into account during your medical review and can discuss whether nitrous oxide or another approach makes more sense for you.
Recovery is quick with nitrous oxide because the effects wear off in minutes once you breathe oxygen. Oral conscious sedation takes longer, so you should plan to rest for the day, avoid alcohol, and have someone check in on you.
We are a privately owned, dentist-led practice that pairs sedation with a calm, coffee shop feel and clear communication. You are not just a number here, and we use our training, monitoring, and judgment-free approach to help you feel cared for all under the same roof.

Expertise and Compassion

Meet Dr. Greg Feldman, DMD

Dr. Greg Feldman earned both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees from the University of Florida, making him a proud Double Gator. With over 1,800 hours of continuing education, he holds credentials achieved by only a small percentage of dentists nationwide, including his Fellowship and Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD and MAGD) and his Fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI).

His passion for dentistry started in the dental chair. Born with a congenitally missing adult tooth, he experienced firsthand the life-changing impact of quality dental care. That personal connection drives his commitment to making every patient feel heard, comfortable, and confident in their treatment.

At Gainesville Dentistry Co., we built our practice around doing dentistry differently. You won’t find a corporate feel here. Instead, you’ll find a doctor who takes the time to listen, explain your options honestly, and deliver care with precision and warmth. From dental implants and full mouth rehabilitation to clear aligners, Botox, and sleep apnea treatment, Dr. Feldman brings advanced training and genuine compassion to every visit.

First impressions are very important. When I entered the Gainesville Dentistry Co. office, I was immediately impressed by its cleanliness and a very pleasant fresh scent. The receptionist and Dr. Feldman’s assistant Narlyn were very welcoming and friendly. I was very impressed by the comfortable modern chair and the state-of-the-art equipment. The Xray charts were clearly positioned in front of you while the doctor explained and pointed out the results and necessary treatment. When I met Dr. Feldman, I recognized him as the dentist whose patient I was, briefly, years ago in Ocala before he left my area. I was looking for him for a long time before I found him in Gainesville. I came to Dr. Feldman for a second opinion. He was extremely generous with his time and explained very thoroughly what was accurate and what not so much about the previous dentist’s plan. I felt that Dr. Feldman is very knowledgeable and honest, and I decided to continue on with him. It is well worth my long drive to Gainesville knowing that I am getting the most skilled and professional treatment possible.

I did the $125 new patient special along with a teeth cleaning. I was so impressed. The vibe of the office is so cozy chic. The front desk staff especially Candice is so helpful over the phone and in person. Heather did all of my X-rays and cleaning and she was wonderful! I liked that they didn’t constantly try to push costly additions. They were very honest and straightforward, no gimmicks. Will definitely be back.
